Definition + Intuition
, for is a class of structures in some language in some language is an AEC (Abstract Elementary Class) if it has the following properties:
- is a partial-order on
- if if is a substructure of
- is closed under isomorphisms, that is if and , then . Also, if and , then .
- If , then
- Tarski-Vaught chain axioms: If is an ordinal and { | } is a chain (i.e., ), then
- If for all then
- Löwenheim-Skolem axiom: There exists a cardinal such that if then there is a whose universe contains A such that and Let denote the least such and call it the Löwenheim-Skolem number of
Abstract elementary class allows us to study a class of objects w/out going into the specifics of logics (i.e., syntax). AEC’s provide a diverse framework to work w/in to study semantics and model-theoretic properties of structures.
The relation is a ‘strong’ substructure relation, which is analogous to a generalization of the elementary substructure relation (in the context of AEC’s).
A simple example of an AEC is an elementary class. If T is a first-order theory, then Mod (the class of all models of ) together with elementary substructure forms an AEC w/ Löwenheim–Skolem number .
Useful Properties for AEC’s
- It is often assumed that do not contain maximal models (w/ respect to cardinality and the '' relation), that is, it is assumed there does not exists a structure such that for all .
The following properties are also often assumed for AEC’s:
Tameness: Fragment of compactness for AEC’s
An AEC is -weakly tame if for any saturated model such that if with then for some w/ .
Notation: means the maximally consistent set of formulas that only has parameters
i.e., Any two Galois types that differ have a small sub model
An AEC is -tame if the above holds for all with cardinality
Joint Elementary Property: An AEC has the joint elementary property (JEP) if for any two structures , then there exists a structure such that there are strong embeddings and .
Amalgamation Property: If you have a structure and two extensions of , then there exists another structure such that there is and over .
Note: For elementary classes, the joint elementary property holds whenever the theory is complete. The amalgamation property and the non-existence of maximal models in are consequences of the compactness property.
Monster Model: is a monster model if it -saturated for a sufficiently large (-homogeneity), where all Galois types over substructures of size and by implication, any partial elementary map between ‘small’ () substructures extends to an automorphism of .
Note: ‘Large enough’ meaning larger than all models you intend to work over, and so every relevant structure embeds into . Choosing for is -saturated, or a strong inaccessible cardinal.
Embedding reducts.
