The Notion of Types in Model Theory

Suppose is an -structure and . Let be the language obtained by adding constant symbols for each , can be seen as a -structure by interpreting the new symbols. Let be the set of all -sentences true in .

Types (Model Theory): Let be the set of -formulas in free variable . We call an -type if is satisfiable. We say that is a complete -type if or for all -formulas with free variable from . Let be the set of all complete -types. The intuition behind a type is that is a set of formulas which describe a possible element (or tuple of elements) in a model

Incomplete types are also referred to as ‘partial’ types

Realizing and Omitting Types For is an -type over a subset , we say that realizes p if for all . If is not realized in ( for ), then we say that omits .

Witnesses: A witness is an instance of where when substituted into an existential formula then is true.

E.g., An (arithmetic) theory is inconsistent if there is a proof of Let denote ” is inconsistent”

is thus an existential formula, and so a witness for this formula is a proof of

Types of Models in Stability Theory

Homogeneous models: Let be an infinite cardinal. We say that is -homogeneous if whenever with is a partial elementary map, and , there is such that is partial elementary. We say that is homogeneous if it is -homogeneous.

Prime models: We say that is a prime model of if whenever there is an elementary embedding A prime model is a model of a (complete) theory which elementary embeds into every other model of

If and are prime models, then

Atomic models: We say that is atomic if tp is isolated for all .

Note: prime models are atomic.

Theorem: Let be a countable language and let be a complete -theory with infinite models. Then, is prime if and only if it is countable and atomic

Theorem: Let be a countable language and a complete -theory with infinite models. Then the following are equivalent: i) has a prime model; ii) has an atomic model; iii) The isolated types in are dense for all

Saturated models: Let be an infinite cardinal, we say that a model (for is some theory) is -saturated if, for all , if and , then is realized in . We say that is saturated if it is -saturated.

Stability: Let be a complete theory in a countable language and let be an infinite cardinal. We say that is -stable if whenever and , then . We say that is -stable if Th() is -stable.

Theorem: Let be a complete theory in a countable language. If is -stable, then is -stable for all infinite cardinals .
